Every morning or so, I walk around the bike shop. I’m looking to see if anyone dropped off any new inventory — or if any existing inventory has walked off. I don’t always get down to the shop every afternoon, especially the afternoons we’re closed, so this keeps me in touch.
Lately, I’ve stood at the front door and let my eyes sweep slowly across the inventory there as I suck in the scent of so much rubber and plastic… roasting.
In the morning!
It’s hot!
That bears repeating: it’s hot! A record-pushing span of record breaking heat across our part of the state. This kind of heat has an impact on our lives, even if we are able to minimize that impact.
Personally – that is, in my personal life – I’m having trouble sleeping because I’m drinking more of all kinds of liquid, including those containing caffeine AND I’m staying up later and getting up earlier. This forces me to seek out siesta time daily.
Professionally, the heat has required a different approach to when and how we work on bikes. We’re known for taking breaks throughout the work afternoon and cooling off (or warming up in winter). Right now, though, the interior of the bike shop is in the 120° range, and it doesn’t cool down much below 90° overnight, if that.
See Change
So, we’re temporarilly adjusting our weekly hours: we are opening at 7 p.m. and working toward 10 p.m. I say toward 10 p.m. because even this late, the shop is still quite obnoxious, and we kind of peter-out after just a couple of hours.
If our other jobs were outdoors, we might be a little more hardened to the heat. But both of us work in an airconditioned environment for our 40/week, and we’re just not going to take it.
Send us a text and we’ll still work to meet you at the shop whenever you need, just don’t look for us to be hanging out until close to dark! Thank you for your understanding.
